The Right Reverend Monsignor Peter P. Tay, 98, a retired priest of the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh, fell asleep in the Lord Sunday, December 10th. He had been a faithful priest for 69 years. He cherished with pride his service in the U.S. Navy on the Midway Islands in the Pacific Theater of Operations from 1944-1946. His precious values were God, Country, Family and Friends.
He was born on July 7, 1925, one of five children of the late Peter and Mary (Homa) Tay. He was a vocation from St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, Johnstown, PA. Having graduated from Johnstown Central Senior High School, he then studied at the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Detroit, St. Francis College, Loretto, PA, St. Procopius College, Lisle, IL, and then pursued further studies and priesthood formation at the Byzantine Catholic Seminary of Saints Cyril and Methodius, Pittsburgh.
He was ordained to the Priesthood on May 31, 1954 by the Most Reverend Daniel J. Ivancho at Mt. St. Macrina, Uniontown, PA. He served several parishes in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Illinois. His last assignment was Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church on Pittsburgh's North Side from 1968 until his retirement in 2001. He had built the Holy Ghost Social Center on Church property and class room complex which was dedicated in 1977. He was assigned to several Archieparchial posts including his exemplary performance as Archieparchial Treasurer. Pope Paul VI granted him the title of Right Reverend Monsignor in 1975. He is survived by his nephew Jeno Lecci and dear family friend, Joan Senchyshyn, several nieces and nephews. The Right Reverend Monsignor will lay in repose in Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church, Superior Avenue, North Side, Pittsburgh, on Wednesday and Thursday from 2:00 - 4:00 pm & 6:00 - 8:00 pm.
A Panachida will be held on Wednesday at 2:00 pm as his body lie in repose at the church.
Parastas Part 1 for a Priest will be held on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Parastas Part 2 for a Priest will be held on Thursday at 7:00 pm. at the church.
Funeral Divine Liturgy on Friday at 10:00 am in Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church with Metropolitan Archbishop William C. Skurla as the principal celebrant and eulogist and Reverend Father Frank Firko as the Con-Celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Lower Yoder Twp., Johnstown, PA 15906 on Friday at 2:30 pm.
